A comprehensive specification detailing business, stakeholder, functional, non-functional, and transition requirements.
2. Why?
Provides an unambiguous contractual and technical baseline for design, development, and testing.
3. When?
Elicited during initial planning and baseline sign-off, updated via formal change control.
4. Who?
Authored by Business Analyst and Product Owner, verified by Lead Architect and Approved by Sponsor.
Tailoring Tips
- Structure as hierarchical user stories and epics with acceptance criteria for agile execution.
- Utilize formal IEEE/ISO specifications for regulated enterprise software engineering.
Alignment & Dependencies
1. Pre-requisites & Inputs (Upstream Dependencies)
- Mandatory:
- Project Charter (PMO-03.01)
- Optional / Contextual:
- Product Vision (PMO-03.02)
- Assumption Log (PMO-03.03)
2. Downstream Dependents
- Mandatory:
- Work Breakdown Structure (PMO-04.02.06)
- Project Schedule (PMO-04.03.08)
- Cost Estimates (PMO-04.04.02)
- Optional / Contextual:
- Product Backlog (PMO-04.02.08)
- Quality Metrics (PMO-04.05.02)
5. How?
To accurately and professionally complete the Requirements Documentation, the responsible party
must populate the following critical sections based on the project context (ensure parameters.md is referenced for global project variables):
- Business Objectives and Goals: High-level organizational motivations, strategic drivers, and target business problems to solve.
- Business Process Impact: Current-state vs. target-state operational workflow enhancements and process impacts.
- Business Value and Success Criteria: Measurable commercial, operational, or customer value expected upon delivery.
- User Persona and Needs Summary: Detailed operational requirements categorized by specific stakeholder groups and user personas.
- Stakeholder Pain Points and Expectations: Critical operational pain points addressed and expected behavioral outcomes.
- Functional Requirements Specification: Detailed capabilities, system interactions, features, and functional behavior.
- Technical Architecture and System Constraints: System interfaces, infrastructure prerequisites, data architecture, and technological boundaries.
- Non-Functional Requirements (Quality of Service): Performance thresholds, security standards, availability, scalability, and usability criteria.
- Transition and Readiness Requirements: Data migration, end-user training, operational handover, and rollout support prerequisites.
