Lessons learned are compiled throughout the project or at specific intervals, such as at the end of a life cycle phase. Individual lessons are recorded in the lessons learned register. This summary compiles and organizes what the project team did that worked very well and should be passed along to other project teams, and identifies what should be improved for future project work.
This summary supports process 4.7 Close Project or Phase in the PMBOK Guide - Sixth Edition. It is developed at the close of a phase for long projects, and at the close of the project for shorter projects.
Writing guidance:
* The performance matrix is two columns by design: what worked well, and what can be improved. An entry that could sit in either column belongs in neither, so say which it is.
* Write the practice, not the meeting. "Ran a joint risk review with the vendor weekly" is a lesson; "we had a risk meeting" is not.
* Where a response failed, say so. A summary that records only successes is of no use to the next project.
* Where an area had nothing worth recording, write that plainly rather than inventing an entry. A short honest cell is more valuable than a long speculative one.
* Specific risks, quality defects, and vendor disputes are recorded in their own sections below. Do not repeat them in the performance matrix; cross-reference them instead.
Alignment: this summary should be aligned and consistent with the issue register, the risk register, the decision log, the lessons learned register, and the retrospectives.
Tailoring Notes:
* Add, combine, or eliminate rows as needed to capture the important aspects of your project.
* Consider including a section on change management, as that can sometimes be a challenging aspect of projects to manage.
* You may want to include a section on phase management if you are doing the summary at the end of the project.
* Integration management is an important aspect for projects that are part of a program, or for projects that have multiple organizations working on one project.
* If your project used a new development approach, such as a blended predictive and adaptive (agile) approach, consider adding some relevant lessons learned.
The information in this summary is saved, along with the lessons learned register, in a lessons learned repository. The repository can be as simple as a lessons learned binder, or it can be a searchable database, or anything in between.
Section Instructions:

## 1. Project Performance
<!-- Two columns, one for what worked well and one for what can be improved. Take each row from the knowledge area named in the first column. Record the practice itself rather than the meeting in which it was discussed, because the next project needs something it can adopt. Where a response failed, record the failure, since a summary of successes alone is of no use. Where a knowledge area has nothing worth recording, say so plainly instead of inventing an entry. Specific risks, defects, and vendor disputes belong in the sections below; cross-reference them here rather than repeating them. -->

Project Artifact: Lessons Learned Summary
Document Reference: PMO-07.01
This document provides a comprehensive, professional reference to understand the purpose and effective usage of the Lessons Learned Summary in alignment with the Tasleemat framework.
1. What?
A formal Tasleemat-aligned project document known as the Lessons Learned Summary, used to compile and organize what the project team did that worked very well and should be passed along to other project teams, and to identify what should be improved for future project work. It covers project performance, risks and issues, quality defects, vendor management, areas of exceptional performance, and areas for improvement.
2. Why?
To preserve organizational learning so that future projects can adopt what worked and avoid what did not, and to ensure strict alignment with Tasleemat standards.
3. When?
This artifact is prepared at the CLOSING Process Group of the project lifecycle: at the close of a phase for long projects, and at the close of the project for shorter projects. It supports process 4.7 Close Project or Phase.
4. Who?
Responsibilities: Compiled by the Project Manager with the project team, finalized for sign-off by the Sponsor or Client, and archived in the lessons learned repository alongside the lessons learned register.
Tailoring Tips
- Add, combine, or eliminate rows as needed to capture the important aspects of your project.
- Consider including a section on change management, as that can sometimes be a challenging aspect of projects to manage.
- You may want to include a section on phase management if you are doing the summary at the end of the project.
- Integration management is an important aspect for projects that are part of a program or that have multiple organizations working on one project.
- If your project used a new development approach, such as a blended predictive and adaptive (agile) approach, consider adding some relevant lessons learned.
- The lessons learned repository can be as simple as a binder, or a searchable database, or anything in between.
